What you type
Create a House of Quality for an electric kettle. Customer needs are boils quickly with weight 5, quiet operation with weight 4, and easy to clean with weight 4. Engineering characteristics are heating element wattage, lid opening width and wall insulation. Show strong relationships between quick boiling and wattage, quiet operation and insulation, and easy cleaning and lid width; show a moderate relationship between quiet operation and wattage and a weak relationship between quick boiling and insulation. Mark wattage and insulation as negatively correlated.

The drawing

What a QFD House of Quality is.

The House of Quality is the main matrix in Quality Function Deployment. It translates customer requirements, often called the voice of the customer, into measurable engineering characteristics and marks the strength of every relationship.

The roof compares technical characteristics with one another, while the body shows which engineering choices affect each customer need. Teams use it early in design to make trade-offs explicit before detailed development begins.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a House of Quality?

A House of Quality is a QFD matrix that maps customer requirements to the technical characteristics used to meet them. Its roof shows correlations between technical characteristics.

What do 9, 3 and 1 mean in QFD?

They commonly mark a strong, moderate or weak relationship between a customer requirement and a technical characteristic. Empty cells indicate no material relationship.

When should I use QFD?

Use QFD early in product or service design, after customer research has identified needs and before the team commits to detailed specifications.

How large should a House of Quality be?

Start with the few requirements and characteristics needed for the decision at hand. A focused matrix is easier to review and update than one that tries to cover every feature.
